Looking Back at Godâs Faithfulness
When my son, Christian, was ten years old, he gave me a Promise Box. He made it himself, and itâs one of the sweetest gifts heâs ever given me. The edges are a little rough, and a few of the mirrored tiles he glued on have fallen off, but I treasure it.
When he presented it to me, he said, âItâs to keep all the promises God gives you, Mom.â
I lifted the lid and looked inside. About two-thirds of the way down was a little door, so I opened it. Inside he had put a purple glass heart.
âThatâs to remind you that God loves youâand so do I,â he said with a big grin.
The box sits in my office, and I often open it, take out that glass heart, and hold it for a moment. Some days I just need to remind myself of Godâs faithful love. You probably do too.
And when you do, I imagine you pinpoint important milestones in your faith journey, times when God delivered you or clearly spoke a word of comfort.
The Israelites discovered the value of making a pilgrimage to these points along their faith journey. They shared with their children the stories of Godâs past deliverance as they went about their daily work. They recounted those moments of rescue in their songs and poems. They reenacted them during their festivals.
A glimpse into Jesusâ childhood came during one of these communal remembrances of Godâs faithfulness. You may remember when the young Savior stayed behind in crowded Jerusalem as the others headed home to Nazareth. Did you know that the pilgrimage to Jerusalemâthe journey itselfâwas an occasion for remembering?
As the people walked along the popular Ridge Route, they passed many sites that were important to their faith: Shechem, where the covenant was made; Mount Ebal, where Joshua rededicated Israel as they settled in the promised land; and Bethel, where God made promises to Jacob. As they walked, the parents pointed out these sites and taught their children about Godâs great faithfulness. The people knew the importance of looking back.
Looking back is important for us too. If youâre facing seemingly impossible circumstances today, take a moment to look back and remember when God did the impossible for you. As you thank Him for His past deliverance, youâll find fresh courage for the present challenge.
